The Former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani passed away in Karachi. President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.
He paid tribute to Durrani’s long political journey and his contributions to strengthening democratic values in Sindh and across Pakistan.
Agha Siraj Durrani was a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and a well-known political figure from Shikarpur. He began his career with the PPP in 1988 and remained a close confidante of President Zardari.
It is pertinent to mention that Durrani belonged to a political family, as both his father and uncle had earlier served as speakers of the Sindh Assembly.

During his career, Durrani held several important positions. He served as the Speaker of the Sindh Assembly from May 31, 2013, to February 25, 2024, and acted as the Governor of Sindh on three different occasions. He was also elected multiple times as a Member of the Provincial Assembly from constituencies in Shikarpur.
According to initial reports, Durrani faced several legal and political challenges during his tenure. He was accused in a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) case for owning assets beyond known income sources, estimated at around Rs. 1.6 billion. He was arrested in 2019 and later sent on a judicial remand.
In October 2024, Durrani suffered a brain hemorrhage and was admitted to the hospital, where his health remained critical.
It is pertinent to mention that in August 2023, the Sindh Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution praising his services. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had stated that Durrani was unfairly targeted for political reasons by the previous government.
President Zardari, while mourning his death, said Durrani’s services for democracy and the PPP will always be remembered.
